Why You Should Downsize Your Closet Down to the Essentials

With the hustle and bustle of everyday life it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Emails, deadlines, and social media consume our lives and show very little signs of slowing down in the future.

For those looking to simplify their lives, the first step starts in your closet. Cleaning out your closet is one of the most gratifying things someone can do.

However, in this case we are getting rid of the old and bringing in the….old?

What I mean by that is, when purging your closet the first thing you should do isn’t to bring new things in, but edit what you already have. In order to do that, we need to establish what a “staple” is in fashion terminology.

A staple is considered something essential for your wardrobe and does not go out of style. A staple also typically goes with everything due to its color, style or use.

A few examples taken from my wardrobe would be:

  • the White Collared Shirt,

  • the Black Turtleneck

  • the Black Tailored Dinner Jacket.

These are just a few classic pieces that can be styled with literally anything and will never go out of style. If you buy the right quality, they will last you forever.

A staple can be something more casual like a classic hoodie or even something as simple as a white t-shirt. It doesn’t necessarily have to be “classy clothing.”

The point of a good closet purge is to keep the essentials.

Throughout the process, you should be asking yourself “Do I actually wear this?” or “Was this just a trendy buy?” During this entire process you should be eliminating things that will go out of style or things that do not have longevity.

Having a more simplified wardrobe encourages a more relaxed environment and allows you to have a chance to really think about your true personal style.
