Introducing a hybrid of classic 90s hip-hop with a vintage of soul, Amsterdam-based artist Jay-Way is set on defying barriers with his unique sound.
Who are some artists that you look up to and draw inspiration from?
Michael Jackson for sure. His whole catalog is so interesting. Every project was a reflection of the times. His hunger for excellence is something I draw a lot of inspiration from. The genius of Pharrell Williams and Tyler, the Creator inspired me too. It gave me the confidence to trust my gut feelings and embrace the nuances of my art regardless of public opinion. Lil Wayne’s work dedication (no pun intended), especially during his mixtape run, motivates me to be extremely diligent with my pen game.
Can you tell us what was the creative process behind writing and producing the music video for "Shawty Goodnight" and your latest single "Deep End"?
I write from a real place. I wrote "Shawty Goodnight" after a breakup. Choosing a relationship over my music career is not something I'm willing to do at this time. “She broke up with me and now I feel better.” With the music video, we illustrated that scenario. Director Mike Falobi and our entire film crew presented an accurate depiction of the story. Joachim [Spruijt] helped me with the treatment so I could not be happier about the result.
The guitar melody on "Deep End" was captivating and gave me 2000's R&B vibes. This song is about me realizing how scared I am to face heartbreak, so scared that I don't even want my partner to tell me if she was to ever cheat on me. I asked my good friend and fellow artist from The Netherlands, Digitzz to join me on this record. I always appreciated his artistry and he gave this record a whole different twist.
If you were given the choice of collaborating with any artist who would it be and why?
Tyler, the Creator. I love the way he composes, I love the way he arranges songs, and this guy has the most captivating bridges! It has always been a dream to work with Pharrell. He’s the reason I can do what I do. Maybe a project with P in the future who knows.
Is there anything you’re currently working on for later in the year? If so, what can fans expect?
The fans can expect my first album Island, Forgotten this year and we’re about to be back outside, so expect tour dates.
