The 1975 released their fifth studio album, Being Funny in a Foreign Language, on October 14, 2022, and fans have quickly deemed this the renaissance of the year 2014. Produced by Jack Antonoff, Being Funny in a Foreign Language (BFIAFL) is eleven tracks of pure nostalgia and has quickly resonated with longtime longtime supporters of the band due to its similarity to their older albums, especially their debut, The 1975. In true The 1975 fashion, the first track is titled “The 1975” which is a staple for all their previous works and sets the tone for the rest of the album. Lead singer of the band, Matty Healy, even stated that, “The 1975 is always our status update” and “then we go into the album, which is me living that life, in that time” Tracks such as “Happiness”, “I’m In Love with You”, and “Part of the Band” have become extremely popular with fans who find the tracks nostalgic to the band’s older music.

One song in particular has especially stood out and gained traction on TikTok. “About You” has been dubbed the song that has brought 2014 back to life. Healy has stated in the Spotify Storylines that, “About You” is “a continuation of Robbers," one of their most popular singles off their first album which was released in 2013. The song also features a bridge sung by Carly Holt, the wife of lead guitarist Adam Hann, that people cannot get enough of. On TikTok the song has become an instant favorite with almost ten thousand videos using the audio. Fans have been making videos expressing their love and support with the song and have garnered hundreds of comments stating things like:

“This song altered the chemistry of my brain”

“It’s been on repeat since the day it came out”

“This song is exactly how the 1975 is supposed to be experienced”

“This song awoke my middle school self”

Being Funny in a Foreign Language is an instant hit with the familiar catchy beats and ambiguous lyrics that The 1975 are known for. Many of the band’s supporters have been around since the release of their first album, almost a decade ago, and have grown up and with the 1975. This album has a similar feeling to the band’s earlier albums, and fans are loving the music that reminds them of why they started listening in the first place. This is an album that you do not want to miss out on.

The 1975 will begin their world tour in Uncasville, Connecticut on November 3, 2022 and will continue touring throughout the end of the year. What songs do you think will make the setlist?
